In the Catholic faith, the process of becoming a Saint, called "canonization" is quite complex.
Formal canonization can take many years or even centuries, with four major steps.
- The candidate's life is examined by an expert and an official report is submitted to the bishop. The informationgoes on to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints of the Holy See.
- If the application is approved, the candidate may be granted the title Venerable.
- Further investigation, may lead to the candidate's beatification with the title Blessed.
- Proof of two important miracles are required, at which point the Pope may canonize the candidate as a Saint.
