"The Ugly Duckling" (1843) is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.

In the tale a mother ducks eggs hatch, but one of the offspring doesn't look like the others. He is taunted by the other animals, who think him "ugly". He suffers a long series of misfortune and ill-treatment. It is only on seeing his own reflection a year later that he realises he was a swan all along.
